Horse racing in Cape Town

Richard Nurse
Destination Manager

This week our Destination Manager Richard Nurse discusses the opportunities for a horse racing holiday in South Africa. To find out more, head to ITC Luxury Travel sister company, Horse Racing Abroad…

Well, as the lovely weather continues here in Cape Town I thought I would talk about the wonderful horse racing opportunities that exist in Cape Town during our summer months and also make you aware that Horse Racing Abroad (HRA) is featuring one of the major races in Cape Town in January 2016.

As I was about to expand on the virtues of travelling with us to Cape Town for the racing season I received an email from one of our clients who had in fact experienced the HRA/ITC package to Cape Town in 2013, and she asked me if she could write a small piece in support of our next trip.

Absolutely I thought! What a great idea and what a lovely endorsement it would be for this wonderful holiday. So thank you Dr Jill and Professor John Warner for your kind words which are included below.

“In January 2013 we travelled with ITC to Cape Town - to say that the visit was absolutely fabulous, and indeed life-changing, would only be an underestimate!

“We were escorted around Cape Town and surrounding areas by friendly and extremely knowledgeable guides who were always punctual and helpful. Our visit to Klawervlei Stud was magical where all the people there made us feel incredibly welcomed and the stallions and their racing pedigrees were magnificent - so magnificent we decided to buy a share in a filly from the stud who was being sold at the Cape Thoroughbred Yearling Sale that year! The experience of being at the sale was incomparable - can you imagine sitting at a table in the conference hall of the Cape Town Convention Centre being served lovely food and great wine whilst watching a stream of beautiful horses parading across the stage and being auctioned (an incredibly different sensation to our normal experience of being in a conference centre or at a horse sale!)? The buzz of bidding for a horse in such an environment is incredible.

“Following that, racing at Kenilworth was a treat not be missed and the J&B Met is now a firm fixture in our diaries every year - the combination of top class racing with high class fashion is intoxicating.

“So amazing was our trip and the experience of bidding for and part-owning a South African racehorse that the following year we decided to buy a property in the Cape and now return whenever possible - all thanks to ITC and the opportunity to discover such a wonderful new life.”

So saddle up folks and join us in January 2016!
