The beach city of Santa Monica makes for a superb place to visit and enjoy on your California luxury holiday with ITC Luxury Travel.

So we asked our friends over at the Santa Monica official tourism board to help us put together ten top things to do and reasons to travel to this Southern Californian destination.

Here’s the results:

Take a surf lesson

The beaches of California are renowned for their clean swell and perfect waves, with the unofficial home of surfing, Malibu, north around the cove from Santa Monica city. With miles of sandy shores, there’s plenty of opportunity to make like a local and learn how to ride the waves…So Cal style!

Ride your bike

There are numerous places to hire a bike – even a tandem – for cycling along the front, with the 26-mile beach-bike-path perfect for a pedal!

Watch the sunset

Shutters on the Beach is an idyllic place to stay when you’re in Cali’, offering a beachside retreat with plenty of luxury, a spa and three excellent restaurants. Ask your Travel Specialist about booking a room with a view, where you’ll be able to watch the sun set beneath the Pacific Ocean from the comfort of your luxurious suite.

Shop ‘til you drop

Los Angeles is renowned for its shopping highlights like Rodeo Drive, but you’ll find plenty to tempt your spends in Santa Monica too. For a one-stop-shop head to Santa Monica Place Shopping Mall, while you’ll find designer boutiques on Montana Avenue and high street favourites at 3rd Street Shopping Promenade.

Food on the move

There are some incredible dining venues to tempt your tastebuds in the city, from Michelin-star to beach-side casual. For something a little different try Food Truck Tuesdays; where a wealth of different tasty treats are on offer, including tacos and pizza.

Have your cake

In need of a sugar fix? Head to the world famous Sweet Lady Jane on Montana Avenue; home to incredible cakes, pastries and pies. A true celebrity favourite.

Journey’s end

Did you know that the end of the world’s most famous road trip, Route 66, is on Santa Monica Pier? A great opportunity for a photo or two.

Flex those muscles

Think Santa Monica and you’re likely to picture the world-renowned Muscle Beach; first established just south of the pier back in 1934. It’s a spot that’s certainly worth a stop on your cycle along the front.

Arrive in style

Did you know that Air New Zealand has superb flight options for travel to Los Angeles? Speak to your Travel Specialist about upgrading to Premium Economy or Business Premier.

A great base

Santa Monica is an excellent base from which to enjoy the rest of California, including: Hollywood, Joshua Tree National Park, Yosemite, Disneyland, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara.
