A Concorde career highlight

I was lucky enough to be asked to go to New York for the weekend flying out and inbound on Concorde in 1996. I was so excited!

Working for ITC Luxury Travel I used to send lots of clients to Barbados on Concorde and flying in one myself really was one of my career highlights.

When we arrived on board I was amazed how small it was to be honest. It was long with only two seats on either side and a very narrow aisle; the poor stewardess had a battle to get the trolley down it. Looking back I can’t believe you were able to smoke on the back four rows! Though I have to say that the seats weren’t that comfortable; made from grey leather with hardly any recline. But who cared; it was after all CONCORDE and only 4hrs 20mins to get to New York.

Take off was unbelievable, the Champagne flowed and everyone was in high spirits. Around an hour into the flight over the Atlantic the pilot notified us just before we were about to go Supersonic - MAC 2 (twice the speed of sound). Everyone was quiet and we waited!! Then all of a sudden you could feel the engines thrust as it happened; we all cheered and it was the best experience ever. We flew so high that you could see the curvature of the earth and this was breathtaking.

We had a wonderful stay in New York, but to be honest, I couldn’t wait for the flight home so I could experience it all again! Simply fantastic.
