ITC’s fair city - Chester

As you may know, ITC has its UK headquarters in the historic north-western city of Chester. This Roman city has been our British base for the past 15 years, and as a team we regularly enjoy all it has to offer – such as the famous Chester Races and this year’s magical Winter Wonderland.

We’ve noticed that our fair city has had quite a bit of press coverage recently, with reviewers waxing lyrical about the attraction of Chester as a holiday-spot. As the ITC blog is usually a domain for much further-flung luxury holidays, we though that today we’d hand it over to a little celebration of our hometown….

The most recent glowing review was in last Saturday’s The Times, where Stephen McClarence stayed at the exclusive Chester Grosvenor. As well as dining at an ITC favourite Joseph Benjamin (which is just around the corner from our offices), Stephen and his wife also enjoyed the city’s diverse shopping: “The Rows’ black-and-white half-timbering (part Tudor, part Victorian), is strikingly pretty, like a stage set for Dick Whittington’s London. At dusk, with shop windows glowing, it’s every foreign tourist’s dream of Olde England.”

In his article, Stephen also notes the recent prestigious award denoted to Chester as ‘Europe’s fifth prettiest city’ – as voted for by readers of USA Today. The article about the awards said: "In Chester, Roman walls surround a charming collection of Tudor and Victorian buildings and a delightful shopping district filled with half-timbered shops reminiscent of a Grimm tale.

"There's not a modern structure in sight, making Chester one of the most popular destinations for visitors to Cheshire."

Our city was also praised by Max Woolridge, who, writing in the Daily Mail last month, said:

“If you're thinking about a Christmas present with a difference, treating someone to a hotel stay and a visit to Chester races is a surefire winner.”

All-in-all, we agree that Chester makes for a truly special spot to visit for a long weekend, and if you’re keen to speak to one of our city-based Travel Specialists about your next holiday, ring 01244 355 550
