Following an effortless flight into Faro, just a couple of hours from London with British Airways and after a smooth transfer up to the scenic mountains overlooking the distant Algarve, a wonderful world of calm awaited!

When I arrived at Longevity the scents of eucalyptus and pine coupled with the sound of silence put my senses into overdrive! A warm smile from reception and glass of herbal tea later I was in my suite in awe of the space and views- where to start first- a snooze in my hammock or catching some rays on my lounger? Neither - I decided to explore and found the wonders that this tranquil health retreat had to offer, from indoor and outdoor pools, gym, well being spa, medical spa and its stunning restaurant.

After a lovely less conventional cocktail party of fresh local orange juice and herbal tea I enjoyed a beautiful meal full of vitamins, healthy oils and fresh fish. The head chef (Jan) in Olivers restaurant is keen to explain the concept behind each of his carefully prepared dishes, emphasizing the health benefits to each and also the lack of 'bad' fats and naughty carbohydrates! Eating healthily never tasted so good! After such a gastronomic feast of healthiness an early night was on the cards! The sumptuous bed and mountain breeze made me sleep like a baby, only woken by the sunlight rising over the misty mountains.

On day two and following a healthy breakfast we headed off for a morning hike through the Monchique Mountains, the views are breath taking and it's a pretty good workout different to the regular gym sessions! This was followed by our first appointments - a biophysical examination - sounds very scary but it wasn't I promise! This tests fitness, body composition of muscle, fat and water, whilst working out your biophysical age. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to give advice and guide throughout your experience. It's amazing to see how fit you really are and what needs to be done to promote a longer life. This was followed by a consultation with a nutritionist who offered me objective advice on what my body needs to achieve its physical optimum. The staff are also keen to offer their support and guidance by email following on from this initial consultation (great for when you are back home and really need the support).

After the hard work of the morning - an afternoon body scrub was definitely called for! The spa is fantastic - a huge array of treatment rooms including a sauna and a steam room and the Body Scrub was just heavenly, I glided back to my room smelling of uplifting lime! For this evening we ventured into the local village to experience a real Portuguese restaurant (this is a break from the norm for detox clients) but great to see what else there is on offer for clients who are not on a strict detox package!

On the last day we had a final group session of Pilates -don't go home until you have experienced Pilates with Sophia- you will stretch muscles you didn't know you could stretch whilst experiencing a pretty thorough all body workout! I'm convinced I saw the results straight away!

Longevity can be anything you want it to be! A long spa weekend away to a strict detox- the concept is simple the staff and techniques used all promote the longevity of life! It offers a huge range of treatments and packages, pretty much tailored to whatever the individual wants to achieve from stress relief programmes to weight loss or just a peaceful mountain break away. I would highly recommend a trip here for mind and body!
