Last Thursday I attended the 2011 First Women Awards at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London, having been short-listed for the award in the Tourism and Leisure category. What a room of amazingly successful women across all sorted of businesses. Claire Balding was our host for the evening and I understand she is also a supporter of one of our brands Horse Racing Abroad. She was very witty and sharp and knows more than most the challenges of breaking through a glass ceiling in a male industry!

Now in their seventh year, the First Women Awards, recognizes pioneering women across business and professional life. The awards were created, and are hosted, by Real Business and the CBI. Helen Alexander the first female president of the CBI, said: "The 2011 short-lists are some of the strongest yet, showing how talented women are shaping the future of many of our most significant organizations." It was very humbling to be surrounded by so many inspiring and leading edge figures in business and politics.

It was 'very flattering' to be short-listed and although I didn't win, it was amazing to be part of such an auspicious event and I'd like to offer my congratulations to the winner Thomasina Miers, co Founder and Executive Chef of Wahaca Restaurants, who is just starting a new TV program on channel 4!
